Inktober for SciComm

Inktober for SciComm

There are items and services I use, like, and sometimes write about here at braeuNERD, where you can find affiliate links. If you take action (i.e. make a purchase) after clicking them, I'll probably earn a few bucks from it and get myself a coffee (at no extra cost to you!). I only recommend items and services I've vetted or books I've read.

During Inktober 2020 I decided to follow some prompts from different organizations, and at times there were words that I did not know, and had to google what they meant. What began as a challenge to draw more often and force myself to take 30 min off each day to chill and doodle turned out to be also a way to increase my vocabulary and learn new things. That’s when I thought this could make for a nice SciComm activity!

What exactly is inktober?

Inktober is a drawing challenge founded in 2009 by Jake Parker “to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits”. The general idea is to make one drawing a day for each day of October. It is now a worldwide challenge and since 2016 prompts are published so you have a topic for each day instead of staring at the dreaded blank piece of paper for hours.

This year, together with the suggestions you gave me on Instagram, I’ve put together some #NerdPrompts for us to draw! Are you ready?

Prompts for Inktober2021 Nerd Edition

Do you have to do one each day? Although that’s the general idea, every person can have a different objective. Plus, we don’t all have the time every day! You can make one a day, every other day, one per week, or even just one drawing for the entire month – whatever suits you best!

What happens if I miss a day? Absolutely nothing! This should not be a source of stress in your day – quite the opposite! It can be a reminder to take 15 minutes to relax and distract yourself with a quick ink doodle! Or, if you have the time and had been waiting for an excuse to get back to drawing, this can be the perfect reason to take an hour or more of your day to work on that goal!

Do I have to share what I do? Of course not! If you want to share on social media, go ahead! If you only want to hang it on your refrigerator or show it to your dog, that’s perfect too!

I’ll be sharing my favorites throughout the month on Instagram Carrousels, so if you’d like me to consider yours don’t forget to tag me @braeuNERD and use the hashtag #NerdTober!

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
